DFW College Students: Refill Help Away From Home

Your classes are in DFW, but your primary care clinician and medication records may still be back home. For students 18 and older, an established-medication review may help bridge a gap while you arrange ongoing care.

For students across DFW universities and colleges

This pathway is available to eligible adults physically in Texas, including students at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), the University of North Texas (UNT), UNT Dallas, Texas Woman’s University (TWU), Southern Methodist University (SMU), Texas Christian University (TCU), Dallas College—including El Centro Campus in downtown Dallas—and Collin College.

We are an independent service, not a university clinic, campus pharmacy or school-sponsored health plan. Enrollment is not required, and naming your school does not create a partnership, student discount or insurance agreement.

El Centro students in downtown Dallas

If you attend Dallas College’s El Centro Campus and your PCP is back home, you can request review while physically in Texas. Commuting, clinical rotations and changing class schedules can make a refill gap difficult to manage. Have your medication label, home pharmacy and next appointment date ready, then choose a pharmacy convenient to your own route. This independent telehealth service does not operate a campus clinic or dispense medication at El Centro.

A new semester should not erase your medication history

Moving into student housing, transferring schools, a summer internship or returning after a break can disrupt a routine refill. Start with your current pharmacy and prescriber if possible. If an active eligible prescription has refills, the pharmacy may be able to arrange a transfer. If a new prescription is needed, submit your treatment history for review rather than guessing a dose or restarting an old medicine without advice.

Common student situations

  • Your PCP is in another state: ask whether that clinician can provide care while you are in Texas. If not, a Texas-authorized clinician may evaluate an appropriate temporary refill.
  • You have a campus appointment later: share the appointment date and current supply so the reviewing clinician understands the gap.
  • You moved from overseas: provide records and the generic medication name. U.S. availability and prescribing decisions require independent review.
  • You are home for a break outside Texas: tell us your actual location. This DFW pathway does not authorize care everywhere simply because you attend a Texas school.

What may be considered—and what is excluded

Examples of established, non-controlled therapies that may be reviewed include blood-pressure, thyroid, diabetes, reflux and selected asthma or allergy medications. Some stable non-controlled mental-health maintenance medicines may also be considered after appropriate history and safety review. Eligibility does not guarantee a prescription or a particular quantity.

This service does not provide controlled ADHD stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids or other controlled substances. New or worsening symptoms, a new diagnosis, unstable treatment or overdue monitoring may require a different visit, testing or in-person care.

Student insurance and privacy

The self-pay clinician review costs $39; medicine and labs are separate. A university student plan, parent’s plan or out-of-state insurance card does not automatically cover this service. Ask about the specific BCBSTX PPO verify-first option if applicable. You can also ask your campus health service about its appointment options and charges.

As an adult, use your own secure intake and provide accurate contact details. Upload health information through the secure form. If you use family insurance and have privacy concerns, ask the insurer how claims communications and explanations of benefits are handled; confidentiality cannot be promised for every insurance communication.

Prepare once; keep your long-term care on track

Have your bottle or label photo, dose, refill history, allergies, home prescriber and pharmacy ready. Include recent labs or readings relevant to the medication and the date of your next follow-up. Choose a pharmacy near your campus or home and verify hours and stock directly. A bridge refill, if appropriate, should support a return to your usual clinician or establishment with a local PCP.

When online refill review is not the next step

If you have chest pain, severe trouble breathing, stroke symptoms, fainting or another medical emergency, call 911. If you are unwell after missing medication or cannot safely wait, seek prompt local medical evaluation rather than waiting for an online review or boarding a flight. Do not change your dose or take someone else’s medication to stretch your supply.
